San Jose, CA – October 27, 2009 – SANYO Energy (U.S.A.) Corporation (SANYO), a division of SANYO North America Corporation, a leading company for energy and environment, wishes to congratulate all of the university Solar Decathlon teams that valiantly competed last week on the Mall in Washington, DC. The two-year efforts of all the students and staff involved paid off in an event that showcased the best and brightest new technologies.
SANYO especially is proud to recognize the seven schools which were competing with Sanyo’s HIT solar panels, in alphabetical order: University of Alberta, University of Arizona, Iowa State University, and University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Minnesota, Ohio State University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Notably, this year was the first year in which two of SANYO’s “Energy” and “Environment” products were used in the Solar Decathlon: SANYO’s HIT Double bifacial solar panels, and SANYO’s ultra efficient mini-split HVAC units.
“We were very proud of the participants in this year’s decathlon, they made great efforts as they designed, built and operated the homes for the competition, and we are especially happy to see our products being incorporated,” explains Charles Hanasaki, President of the Solar Division of SANYO Energy (U.S.A.) Corporation. “A healthy, friendly competition like this helps people concentrate more on sustainable lifestyles and sustainable living, lifestyles that SANYO is ready and able to support with renewable, clean energy being provided for more energy efficient appliances.”
The Solar Decathlon is hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy, and entails qualifying teams of college and university students to design, build and operate some of the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house. The Solar Decathlon brings attention to the challenges of meeting the ever-growing needs for energy, while educating, raising awareness, helping solar technologies enter the market more quickly, foster collaboration, focus efforts on a “whole building design”, and demonstrate to the public the potential of “Zero Energy Homes”.
About HIT®
HIT® stands for Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin-layer. HIT® solar cells developed by SANYO are hybrid solar cells composed of single crystalline silicon wafers surrounded by ultra-thin amorphous silicon layers. The unique structure minimizes defects within the p/n junction of the cell, producing highly efficient cells capable of achieving up to 17.1% module efficiency while producing more power even at higher temperatures.
About Mini-split HVAC units
The full range of High Efficiency Air Conditioning Systems was introduced to North America in 1983 and demand has grown steadily over the years. Recently, there has been greater demand for higher efficiency equipment for Heating and Cooling – SANYO’s HVAC products have always been noted for higher efficiency and trouble free operation. We now have a full repertoire of Residential and Commercial ranges of both Ducted and Ductless models. Our distribution network covers all of the United States and Canada.
