SAN DIEGO, CA (August 4, 2009) – SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), a subsidiary of and the North American regional headquarters of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., based in San Diego, has partnered with the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) to replace all traditional dry cell batteries in the CCSE’s facilities with SANYO NiMH ‘eneloop’ Rechargeable Batteries. This announcement follows SANYO’s recent donation of its ‘eneloop’ charging station to the CCSE in a proactive effort to achieve a more sustainable, environmentally responsible California and demonstrate practical ways companies can conserve energy.

The SANYO ‘eneloop’ rechargeable battery is a product specifically designed to encourage reusing existing resources, as it is both rechargeable and recyclable, and ‘eneloop’ blurs the line between typical one-time use, dry cell batteries. ‘eneloop’ rechargeable batteries in comparison come pre-charged, hold up to 85% of the charge after one year of sitting on the shelf, and can be recharged up to 1,000 times. The ‘eneloop’ rechargeable battery technology will be showcased as a truly sustainable solution at the CCSE’s second annual Sustainability Fair for businesses on Thursday, August 6, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Every sustainable action makes an impact, no matter how small,” said Mr. Akihiko Oiwa, director of corporate communications for SANYO North America Corporation. “The CCSE is taking the lead and demonstrating how any enterprise can implement greener business practices. SANYO recommends both businesses and consumers develop lifestyles of reusing products. Ultimately, we are aiming to replace every dry cell battery in the world with a SANYO ‘eneloop’ rechargeable battery.”

SANYO will be among this year’s CCSE Sustainability Fair exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge products and services related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building, transportation and energy conservation.

“SANYO is a true representation of a company creating sustainable products that have a meaningful and positive impact on our planet,” said Irene Stillings, executive director of CCSE. “By using SANYO’s rechargeable batteries throughout our San Diego facilities, our goal is to demonstrate how U.S. businesses and residents can use practical renewable energy sources, such as rechargeable battery power, to conserve energy and reduce their environmental impact. CCSE Sustainability Fair attendees will learn how these basic steps can reduce their carbon footprint, lower energy costs and curb waste and water consumption.”

Due to the popularity of last year’s Sustainability Fair, this year’s event takes place over two full days at the CCSE home office on 8690 Balboa Ave. in Kearny Mesa. Free to the public, SANYO will exhibit on Thursday, August 6, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a day set aside for commercial attendees seeking sustainable business solutions. The fair will then take place again on Sunday, August 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for residential consumers. Both days will feature displays and exhibits with workshops presented by industry experts.

SANYO is currently the world’s largest rechargeable battery manufacturer. Its rechargeable battery technology is the most consistent and reliable available on the market.
